Ambassador Mart visits the South African Institute of International Affairs

The meeting focused on the contemporary relevance of the Non-Aligned Movement on the global stage, as well as its role and significance for South Africa. Particular attention was given to the High-Level Commemorative Meeting held in Belgrade to mark the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement, which concluded yesterday.

The interlocutors exchanged views on the place and role of the Non-Aligned Movement in contemporary international relations, particularly in the context of current geopolitical challenges and the increasingly important role of countries of the Global South. They also discussed the continued relevance of the principles underpinning the Movement, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, equality among states and the strengthening of multilateralism.

Particular attention was paid to Belgrade’s historic role in the establishment and development of the Non-Aligned Movement, as well as to the significance of the fact that, 65 years after the First Conference, a meeting dedicated to the Movement’s legacy and contemporary relevance was once again held in Belgrade.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of continued dialogue between Serbia and South Africa on issues of relevance to the Non-Aligned Movement and contemporary international relations, as well as the value of academic and expert exchanges on these issues.
